Accessibility
Everybody should be able to read this.
We aim at the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, version 2.2, at level AA. This page says what has been checked, what passes, and where we know it does not yet.
What has been checked
Every color that carries a word has been measured against the background it sits on. Paper type over the sky on the home page never drops below a ratio of five to one, and the sky is kept nearly clear of cloud where small type sits straight on it. Ink type on paper is above seven to one throughout. Quiet notes and small caps labels have been darkened until they pass.
The whole site can be used with a keyboard alone. There is a skip link before anything else, every focused control draws a visible ring around itself, the menu closes on Escape, and nothing traps you once you are inside it. The menu is removed from the tab order while it is closed.
If you have asked your device to reduce motion, it reduces. Every rise, fade and drift on this site is switched off by that setting, not softened. Nothing flashes, nothing moves on its own, and nothing is on a timer. Nothing is hidden before scripts run, so a reader whose scripts never arrive sees every word.
The text is real text, not pictures of text, so it enlarges when you enlarge it and it can be read aloud. Each page has one heading at the top and the rest in order beneath it. Every form field has a visible label. The drawings of the book and its pages carry a description a screen reader can read.
Where it falls short
The book itself has not yet been tested with a screen reader. The screen edition is being built with tagged, labelled fields so that a reader using assistive technology can fill it in, and the print edition is being built with a reading order. Until somebody who uses a screen reader every day has tested them, this page will say so rather than claim it.
Buying needs JavaScript. Every page can be read with scripts switched off, and nothing is hidden from you if they do not run. But the buy button and the page one form both need them. If that is a problem for you, write to us and we will take your order by hand.
What we have not done
This site has not been audited by anybody independent, and it has not been tested by somebody who uses a screen reader every day. Those two things are worth more than everything above, and until they have happened this page is a statement of intent as much as a statement of fact.

Write to hello@householdbook.com and tell us what you were trying to do and what happened. A person reads it. We will reply, and where it is our fault we will fix it rather than explain it. If you need anything on this site or in the book in another form, ask and we will find a way.
